Some retreats happen a few times a year. At Eremito, the retreat simply never stops: you pick your dates and join the rhythm of the hermitage, any time from March to early January.

Built in local stone at the end of its own forest road, with 3,000 hectares of UNESCO protected woodland around and nothing else, Eremito was imagined in 2013 by Marcello Murzilli as a home for people who travel alone. Out here phones lose their signal naturally, there is no Wi-Fi and no television, and a dedicated outdoor corner is the only place where the connected world can reach you.

Days are gentle and entirely optional: readings in the chapel and light yoga in the morning, woodland paths and guided meditation in the afternoon, the relaxation area with its Turkish baths and jacuzzi carved into the rock. At 7:30 each evening a bell calls everyone to the refectory, where a candlelit vegetarian dinner is shared without words, wrapped in Gregorian harmonies. Talk returns later, by the fire, if you feel like it.

You sleep in a Celluzza, a monastic style room of about nine square metres with a stone writing desk, hand sewn hemp bedding and underfloor heating and cooling. Most are single by design; a few welcome two or three guests.

One rate covers it all: full vegetarian board with water and wine, herbal teas, practices, the relaxation area and the jeep ride up from the car park. A B Corp certified ecoresort, about two hours from Rome, with direct trains from Rome and Florence to Fabro-Ficulle station 30 minutes away.

Not a hotel with a retreat programme: a retreat with a front door.

They lead the morning readings and gentle yoga, the afternoon meditations in the chapel and the walks through the forest, always with a light touch: every practice is an invitation, never an obligation. Trained in different traditions, […]
